Former Pastor
Rev. John Bedford Daugherty
1920-1927
Rev. John Bedford Daugherty was born in Monroe County, West Virginia, April 30, 1883, and passed away October 14, 1964 at the age of 81. Bother Daugherty was ordained in 1921. He was a faithful minister of the gospel through all these years. Even after he retired in 1952, he continued conducting revivals and was a great blessing to many churches. He served ten years as a member of the Conference Office Board, and two of the years as Assistant Superintendent. He was superintendent of the West Virginia Conference in 1927, the Virginia conference having divided in 1925. It came back together in 1928.
He established eight churches during his ministry: Bethel, Caldwell White Sulphur Springs, Second Creek, Peniel, Blue Sulphur, in West Virginia; Liberty Hill, and Mitchelltown in Virginia. The Following churches were blessed by his ministry as pastor: Covington, Roanoke, Radford, Austinville, Baker Chapel, St. Paul, Pulaski, Merrimac, and Piedmont.
The Caldwell International Pentecostal Holiness Church has a glorious history. The Caldwell Pentecostal Holiness Church was organized in the month of February 1920. This makes it one of the older churches in the Appalachian Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. The following history of the early days of the churches was written by Rev. John B. Daugherty, founded and organizer of the church. He says: “J. C. Daugherty opened a revival in brother John Seldomridge’s store building in December 1919 and continued for three weeks. Brother J. C. Harless assisting in the latter part of the meeting. Much was accomplished in showing the people their privilege in the Gospel of “old time Power’.
We made an appointment to preach once a month. A Sunday School was organized, and prayer meetings were held. On return to my appointment January 28, 1920, we found the place ripe for the meeting to continue. Brother Harless being with me we continued with wonderful results. Many were saved, others sanctified, others received the Holy Ghost, and some healed. On closing, we organized a church with six charter members whose names are as follows; Sister Allie Sergeon, Julia Sams, Pearl Sergeon, Beckley Masters, Gladis Thomas and Brother Clide Sergeon.” In view of the fact that this account was written by Rev. J. B. Daugherty has been preserved.
The church from the very beginning has been a growing church. Under the leadership of faithful ministers, it has made steady progress. The building was erected, and as of the size of the congregation began to increase, Sunday School rooms were added to the front. This met the need for several years. In many places people were moving from the country to the city, and most country churches were declining in attendance. However, the Caldwell church refuses to conform to this idea and continued to grow. More Sunday school rooms were needed. The church voted to make an addition to the rear of the church. With new addition the church now has a nice auditorium, twelve Sunday school rooms including the assembly room. In addition to these it has a pastor's Study, Sunday School secretary's office, one utility room, and two restrooms. For many years one pastor served the Caldwell and White Sulphur Springs churches. The pastor lived in a parsonage in White Sulphur Springs. Part of this time the pastor oversaw two other churches in the district. In 1949 the conference appointed Rev. Paul Hambrick as a full-time pastor of the Caldwell Church. The Church bought a parsonage and for the first time had a full-time pastor living in the community. The church started with six members. Today the membership is 102. Sunday School started with a small number attending. Today there are over 200 enrolled.
The record Sunday school attendance is 360.
The original church property was worth approximately $3,500.00.
The church property today including the parsonage is worth $50,000.00.

On June 24th 2016 a historical flood called “The 1,000nd year flood” tour though the small town of Caldwell, West Virginia devastating the entire town as well as many other surrounding areas, completely destroying the well known “Caldwell Pentecostal Holiness Church”. Although the structure still stood after the flood waters receded the damage to the church was extreme. The future of the church was uncertain, to better foresee the future of our church a building engineer was assigned to assess the building to see if it was going to be able to be repaired or tore down. Sadly the engineer deemed it to be beyond repair and had to be torn down. Majority of the congregation wanted to try and save the old church since this is not the only flood it has been though; and so many fond memories where made there over 96 years. Since this flood in particular was much faster moving and destructive the structure suffered major structural damage and fear of mold was a concern if they were to try to rebuild. The building still stood for another 7 months before finally being razed on December 27, 2016 at approximately 10 O’clock that morning by All Construction Inc.. The Church Building was about 96 years old.
